Dr. Viterbi, cofounder and former vice chairman of Qualcomm, the San Diego-based wireless technology company, is most famous for developing the Viterbi Algorithm in 1966, a ground breaking mathematical formula used for eliminating signal interference. Today, the algorithm is used in most digital cellular phones and satellite receivers, as well as in such diverse fields as magnetic recording, voice recognition and DNA sequence analysis.
