The rise of Jane Friedman, the legendary President and Chief Executive Officer of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide, isn't so much a rags-to-riches story as it is a real page-turner. She started out in the typing pool at Random House, where she rose to Executive Vice President. (She jokes that she became an overnight success after only 30 years.) She took over at HarperCollins in 1997 and still retains the distinction of being the only female global CEO of a publishing company. The woman who all but invented the author's tour and who pioneered audio publishing in the 1980s also resuscitated HarperCollins and increased profits an astounding 1,000%.
