Katrina Swett, daughter of California Democrat Tom Lantos, is optimistic about her chances of winning the U.S. Senate seat for the state of New Hampshire in 2008. “Even though I have not served yet, I have been able to absorb a great deal just from watching my father all these years. He provided a tremendous ethic of public service. We were shown that politics can be a noble profession. Dad said he would be proud to see any members of his family pursue this route.” To date, Lantos remains the sole Holocaust survivor to ever serve in the United States Congress and is currently in his 14th term in the House of Representatives. His tenure has been characterized by reform and the ability to tackle major issues, but he is best known for his involvement in international affairs. Swett explains, “My father taught us to decide what’s important and then stand up and fight for it.” She has certainly taken the advice to heart, and for her service to the community, Swett was honored as the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian of the Year.
